Presentation by Mark Kelley, author of An Uncommon Woman: The Life of Lydia Hamilton Smith. Smith was a mixed-race businesswoman in Lancaster, PA, who, for 25 years, engaged in a committed interracial relationship with abolitionist congressman Thaddeus Stevens. Together, they worked to secure the rights of African-Americans, aided freedom seekers on their journeys north, managed two households, and established a real-estate business.
