DESCRIPTION:Join Rokeby Museum for a two-week immersive experience like no other. Set on a serene\, historic property\, young people will lose themselves in another time as they gain valuable stage experience. This unique program combines aspects of art\, outdoor education\, hands-on history\, and\, of course\, theater! There will be raffle prizes and music by Vermont Folklife/Young Tradition Vermont—Sugar in the Pan Trad Band throughout the afternoon! Let’s Grow Kids will have a table set up with games for kids! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBring your family and friends and spend the afternoon eating pie and reconnecting with the community — a delicious way to support the Museum. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVermont Folklife/Young Tradition Vermont—Sugar in the Pan Trad Band plays traditional music from New England\, Québec\, Maritime Canada\, and beyond\, featuring lively tunes that will have folks of all ages up & dancing!  These fantastic teenage musicians with the Young Tradition Vermont Touring Group\, Ari Glasser\, Isabella Rotler\, and Henry Kervick\, offer creative and engaging arrangements for audiences.  They have performed at the New World Festival in Randolph and the Young Tradition Festival in Burlington\, toured Cape Breton in 2023 and Québec in 2024\, and have entertained at various retirement communities and schools in Vermont. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is made possible thanks to the generosity of our sponsors. The lecture will be recorded and posted on the museum’s blog later this month.  \n\n\n\n\nRokeby Museum will host an evening discussion with author and journalist Scott Shane on his 2023 book Flee North: A Forgotten Hero and the Fight for Freedom in Slavery’s Borderland. FLEE NORTH unearths the lost story of Thomas Smallwood\, born into slavery in Maryland\, who bought his freedom\, educated himself\, and became a shoemaker in Southwest Washington\, a short walk from the U.S. Capitol. Smallwood began to organize mass escapes from slavery by the wagonload\, with the help of a young white partner\, Charles Torrey — and wrote about the escapes in extraordinary satirical dispatches for an abolitionist newspaper in Albany. It was Smallwood\, Scott Shane discovered\, who gave the underground railroad its name. Smallwood’s daring operation took place against the very dark background of the domestic slave trade\, which thrived on Washington’s Mall and at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor\, shipping thousands of people every year away from their families to the cotton and sugar plantations of the deep south. The book’s third central character\, Baltimore’s Hope Slatter\, was the era’s dominant slave trader\, operating from his private “slave jail” near Baltimore’s harbor.  \n\n\n\n\nFLEE NORTH: A Forgotten Hero and the Fight for Freedom in Slavery’s Borderland was named one of the best ten books of 2023 by Publishers Weekly (“This astonishing and propulsive narrative rights a historical wrong by returning [Thomas] Smallwood to prominence. It’s an absolute must-read”) and one of top 20 by Amazon (“Scott Shane’s narrative account is visceral\, a stunning feat of historical storytelling as you’re transported into the terrifying life of an enslaved person in 1800s Baltimore”). Henry Louis Gates Jr. called it “riveting” and Taylor Branch called it “a treasure.”  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Scott Shane\n\n\n\nScott Shane was a reporter for 15 years at The New York Times\, where he was twice a member of teams that won Pulitzer Prizes\, and before that\, for 21 years at The Baltimore Sun. His two previous books are Dismantling Utopia\, a firsthand account of the collapse of the Soviet Union\, and Objective Troy\, the story of an American terrorist killed in a drone strike on orders of President Obama. In 2019–2020\, he was a fellow at the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University\, where he taught courses on media and on the Russian attack on the 2016 American presidential election. DESCRIPTION:5 performances per night. Choose the time that works for you! \n\n\n\n\nRokeby Museum is presenting a new immersive theater experience inspired by the Spiritualist history at the museum. Ticket holders will gather for a drink and a short talk on Victorian Spiritualism before entering the Historic Home where actors will guide them through participatory dramatization\, recreating séances based on Rokeby records and other historical accounts. With multiple performance times per night\, this year’s production welcomes an unexpected guest… \n\n\n\n\n\nSplit Spirits Distillery is returning this year! Those aged 21 and over can purchase a specialty cocktail before the performance and enjoy it at the program’s start. A selection of tastings from the distillery will also be available. Ticketholders can also enjoy a non-alcoholic hot cider before the performance.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\n\nDates: Friday–Saturday\, October 17–18 | Friday–Saturday\, October 24–25\n\n\n\nPerformance Times: 5:00 pm | 5:45 pm | 7:00 pm | 7:45 pm | 8:30 pm\n\n\n\nThe program lasts about 45 min to an hour\n\n\n\nTimed tickets must be purchased in advance\n\n\n\nLimited to 15 seats per time slot\n\n\n\nTicketholders should meet in Education Center to check in\n\n\n\n$20 for Rokeby Members*\n\n\n\n$25 for Non-Members\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets Now!

DESCRIPTION:Explore the historic institutions of Addison County with a traveling winter book club! Between January and April we will discuss a book relevant to each historical institution we visit. Dive into American history with a book selected by Lake Champlain Maritime Museum\, cozy up to a welcoming novel at the Bixby\, contemplate social justice at the Rokeby\, and learn about new Vermonters at the Sheldon.  \n\n\n\nEach discussion will take place from 1–2 pm on the last Saturday of each month as a hybrid meeting — come in person for tea and snacks or stay involved online via Zoom.
